iLogic Tutorial – Setting the parameters and beginning the hinge sketches

After the dialog box closes, there will be a Drop Down Button that contains the values you just entered. A bit later we will be writing the rules that these values will control, but for now, we need to create a couple sketches and some geometry based on the parameters we have created.

iLogic Tutorial for the iDoor Page Two Image 02 - Navigating a complex part in Autodesk InventorYou will now need to rotate the part into position. It will need to be positioned with the back of the door facing up, and the right stile facing you. One easy way to get your bearings is to open up the Solid Bodies folder located near the top of the Browser Bar, and single click on the Right_Stile solid body located there. This will highlight the solid in the graphics window. The part should be positioned as shown below. Note the View Cube. It shows ‘right’ on the bottom and ‘back’ on top (see image below). The top of the part is facing left. Now right click on the top surface of the right stile as shown –select New Sketch from the list presented.

You are now in Sketch Mode, and should have the right stile’s edges projected onto the sketch. In my case, the projected geometry will be black, yours may be a different color based on the settings selected on the Colors tab of the Applications Options dialog –and if no edges were projected, the Sketch tab on that same dialog box needs to have ‘Autoproject edges for sketch creation and edit’ selected. The Background Tutorial will give more info if you want to have a white background.

Now that you have a new Sketch with projected edges, you need to turn the projected edges into Construction Geometry. Window Select the geometry by dragging the cursor to create a window that encompasses all of the projected edges, then click on the Construction tool located on the Format Panel of the Sketch Tab.

You should now have a part that looks like the one above, and still be in sketch mode. Rename the sketch Lg Hinge Layout (you do not need to leave sketch mode to do so). Now zoom in a bit towards the left corner…
